Why? ife! you may ask that question. The right answer for that is: Ife is very important to the Yoruba. What is Ife? Ife is the short form of the word (fife). The word simply mean large or wide etc. The story behind the word is dated back to the time of creation. The time when Eledumare, the supreme God sent out 201 Irunmale, the angels, to the deep to create the earth and the living things. The irunmale left the abode of Eledumare with; expanding sand, seeds of different plants and a four foothed bird call: adie abalaye or adie opipi, meaning prehistoric hen. When the 201 Irunmale reach the level of the deep, they could not land because thers is no foothold. Therefore they stayed mid air. From the mid air, the four foothed bird use its four leg to spreed the sand in the bow, over the deep. As the sands settle at the bottom of the deep, they start expanding until a huge land mass emerge. The Irunmale called it: Ile-Fife
